U.S. Embassy Donates $1.4 Million in Equipment to the Navy

August 5, 2008

On Tuesday August 5, 2008, Chargé d’Affairs of the United States Embassy, Richard Sanders, participated in a ceremony to deliver communications equipment, donated by the American Embassy Military Group to the Nicaraguan Navy.  The Inspector General of the Nicaraguan Army, Major General Ramón Calderón Vindell and Chief of the Navy, Admiral Juan Santiago Estrada received the equipment.

The donation consisted of fifteen Harris brand radio stations, batteries, antennas and other equipment for basic Naval operations, geared toward the fight against narco-trafficking.  This donation is worth approximately $1.4 million dollars.

The Embassy of the United States is also working in conjunction with the U.S. Military’s Southern Command to provide free medical attention via military medical missions, such as the medical-humanitarian mission “Continuing Promise” of the USS Kearsarge to Puerto Cabezas this August.

The Military Group actively contributes to the professional development of the Nicaraguan Army through various programs.  The Military Group will continue to sponsor the program, “Lasting Friendship,” which provides training and additional boats to the Nicaraguan Navy.    This year, they have awarded $600,000 to the Nicaraguan Army, Navy and Air force in over sixty professional development scholarships.

Chargé d’Affairs Sanders said in his speech that “We want to express to the Army that our intention is to continue increased military assistance to jointly confront the new threats and challenges that tend to destabilize regional peace.  With this donation, we are contributing to the modernization of an Army in transition that looks better each day, and is helping preserve the peace of the Nicaraguan people.”
