January 27, 2009
The Government of the United States, through the US Southern Command and local Embassy Military Group, made a substantial donation to the Naval Forces of Nicaragua valued at $400,000.
The donation includes six Zodiac boats, six swamp-runner boats and three electrical generators, among other maritime equipment. The boats are intended to strengthen the Nicaraguan Navy’s capabilities for patrolling coastal and swamp waters in the war on drugs.
In addition to this donation, Ambassador Callahan announced that the USS Swift (HSV-2), a twin hulled catamaran High Speed Cargo Vessel will make a port call in the city of Bluefields in February. The Swift’s crew will train Nicaragua’s Navy and National Police personnel to help strengthen regional security and promote better common maritime practices.
Beginning in March, the US Military Group in Nicaragua will be providing Medical attention through its Medical Readiness Training Exercise (MEDRETE) Program in the city of Pueblo Nuevo, Estelí and will continue with the “Amistad Duradera” (Lasting Friendship) Program which provides training and equipment to Nicaragua’s armed forces.
Among other projects, the Government of the United States, through its Military Group, is reconstructing the Pacific Naval District Wharf and a Civil Defense warehouse in Bluefields.
This is all part of the Military assistance that the Government of the United States provides to help in the modernization of Nicaragua’s Armed Forces.
