Visit to Soccer Without Borders
July 20, 2012
Ambassador Powers visited the Granada office of Soccer Without Borders on July 20, 2012, to help kick off their new season in the community. Soccer Without Borders is a non-profit organization that provides programming to youth who are traditionally excluded from sports-based and extracurricular activities. In Granada, the program offers a welcoming space for girls age 7-19 to develop life-skills, learn soccer and receive the support necessary to become leaders within their own communities.
Ambassador Powers led the program with an inspirational talk with the girls emphasizing teamwork and the positive impact of sports participation. The girls then broke into four groups for activities focused on the themes of unity, confidence, leadership, and teamwork. The creative, physical and mental challenges readied the girls for an active, productive season ahead.
Soccer Without Borders has worked with the U.S. Embassy on programs that support sports diplomacy in Nicaragua.
