Ambassador of the United States Paul A. Trivelli in Occasion of the Distribution of Funds from the Good Government and Business Ethics Program
January 24, 2007
Hotel Hilton Princess
Good morning,
I am pleased to be here today to show the continuous support that my government provides to the Nicaraguan efforts to improve transparency and fight against corruption. This fight takes place just as much in the political and governmental environment as in the private sector environment. The United States Department of Commerce, through the Embassy, has focused its help on the private sector, particularly on the Business Ethics Commission.
The commission is part of a national program for Transparency and Responsibility in Nicaragua. This program promotes an conjunctive answer on behalf of the private section to fight corruption and create an environment of mutual trust – an environment where commerce and investment can grow naturally. The commission has taken on the mission to list and promote ethical practices, more transparency in Nicaraguan businesses and to improve the investment environment. Creating a commercial environment that emphasizes transparency, responsibility, and business ethic practices that allow Nicaragua to attract more investment and improve its competitive position in the global market.
The good government program and business ethics that have developed in the Department of Commerce is only a part of the general effort of the Mission of the United States to help Nicaraguan citizens to fight corruption in their country. Through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) my government has been mobilizing the civil society and students on this topic. Transparency and ethical activities in the use of resources, whether public or private, is basic for the battle against corruption. The USAID programs are helping Nicaraguans demand more transparency and responsibility in the administration of university funds, political party funding, and ministerial budgets.
The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) is here today to receive, in the name of the Business Ethics Commission, a check for 9,500 dollars as initial funds to strengthen the fight against corruption in the business environment. This money will be used to promote knowledge in PYMES, universities, and the media about what business ethics consist of and their role in the national effort to increase transparency and fight corruption. The project will also include formation programs dictated by Dr. Phil Nichols from the Wharton Business School.
I am honored to be able to help a group such as the Business Ethics Commission. Their objectives contribute so much to Nicaragua and its citizens. I congratulate you on your efforts and hope that you continue with all your accomplishments. The government of the United States is honored to be partners with you all in this effort and hope to be able to continue working with Nicaraguans to increase transparency and fight corruption in this country.
Thank you for your attention.
