Peace Corps Volunteers Are Sworn In

A total of 51 North Americans were sworn in as Peace Corps Volunteers in a ceremony held at the Intercontinental Metrocentro Hotel on Friday, November 17th .
After 11 weeks of training in Spanish language, Nicaraguan culture orientation and the adaptation to diverse technical aspects in their areas of specialization, the Volunteers will travel to their assigned communities in the rural areas of Nicaragua. Of the 51 Volunteers, 15 will work in the area of agriculture and food security together with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Agriculture and its Institute for Agricultural Technology – INTA. The other 36 Volunteers will work with the Ministry of Education –MECD; 19 of them in the area of environmental education, mainly focusing on grade schools; and 17 Volunteers in the area of English as a Foreign Language focusing on Nicaraguan English teachers who work at the junior high and high school levels.
The 51 Volunteers will now join a team of 150 Peace Corps Volunteers who are presently working in the poorest sectors of the population in different communities in the rural area of Nicaragua. Apart from the three areas already mentioned, the Volunteers in Nicaragua also work on Health and in the Promotion and Development of Small Businesses.
This year Peace Corps completes 25 years of collaboration with the Nicaraguan people and 45 years worldwide. There are 7,810 Volunteers working presently in 75 countries.
