Ambassador Trivelli Response to Open Letter

October 13, 2006

The US Embassy in Nicaragua respects the freedom and right of the people that signed the “Open Letter to Ambassador Paul Trivelli,” a paid-for placement in La Prensa and in El Nuevo Diario, to express their point of view openly and frankly.  We would simply reiterate that the funds the U.S. government has provided to the Nicaraguan government as well as NGOs for the electoral process, have been used in a non-partisan manner for activities which include assistance to obtain voting ID cards, technical assistance to the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), domestic and international observation, civic education and Get Out the Vote.

This program represents the strong commitment our government has made with the people of Nicaraguan and their desire to have free, transparent and inclusive elections.  As Ambassador Trivelli has said many times, “We have not given any endorsement, nor will we give backing to a specific candidate.  We have not financed, nor will we finance any political campaign and, we will not ask for forgiveness for our efforts to support democracy and its development in Nicaragua.
